Flavoured Gin
While historically gin has been required to have a predominant taste of juniper, a cohort of products has emerged that champion other flavours. Some are full-strength spirits, while others are sweeter, lower-ABV liqueurs.
Not your typical flavoured gin, Four Pillars Bloody Shiraz is made by steeping cool climate Shiraz grapes from the Yarra Valley in the distillerys Rare Dry expression for eight weeks. The gin is slightly sweetened by the ripe grapes and turns deep purple, but manages to retain its natural aromatic qualities. Unusually for a flavoured gin, it is bottled with no added sugar.
Suggested serves: Make an eye-catching spritz by topping Four Pillars Bloody Shiraz with sparkling wine and a big squeeze of grapefruit. Its also delicious mixed with bitter lemon in a cold glass full of ice.
Tasting Notes
Deep berry nose with the tannins of red wine and a balsamic vinegar tang. On the palate, a sweet wine taste mixed with fresh strawberry and cooked apple is prominent, but a delicate floral note of juniper permeates. A beautifully smooth finish extends the juniper flavour.
