British Gin
The UK is the motherland of gin, and remains its biggest producer. While gin is often believed to be a quintessentially English spirit, there many excellent gins made throughout the nation.
Thomas Dakin is a juniper-led London Dry that celebrates traditional gin making, using 11 botanical including English coriander and horseradish. The gin is named after an early pioneer of quality English gin, who began distilling in the mid-1700s. Thomas Dakin is currently made by G&J Distillers in Warrington, close to where Dakin distilled his original gin, though plans are underway to move production to a new craft distillery in Manchester.
Suggested serves: Makes a fantastic Negroni (with sweet red vermouth, Campari and orange peel). The brand also recommends a take on the Cosmopolitan, swapping vodka for Thomas Dakin gin.
Tasting Notes
Initial aromas of dried orange peel and cumin give way to fresh grapefruit and rosemary. The gins use of horseradish gives the palate a wonderful dryness and a rich, savoury flavour. A light spice coats the mouth, while delicate flavours of fresh coriander and sweet orange slowly evolve and linger on the finish.
